Article I - Name and Purposes

Section 1 Name: This organization shall be known as the Microbiology Club for Undergraduates.

Section 2 Purpose: The purposes of the Microbiology Club for Undergraduates shall be to

  1. Encourage and sustain student interest in microbiology
  2. Promote intellectual and social interaction among students interested in microbiology
  3. Provide guidance for new students
  4. Maintain faculty-student rapport
  5. Promote awareness of career opportunities in microbiology

Article II - Membership

Section 1: Membership shall be open to all regularly enrolled North Carolina State University undergraduate students who are interested in microbiology.

Section 2: Students may join the club at any time during the semester through payment of dues at any of the regularly scheduled meetings.

Section 3: Two categories of membership are recognized. They are

  1. Active members of the club- any student who has paid club dues and participates in club activities at least once a month during the semester. Club activities are defined as meetings, service projects, and fund-raising activities.
  2. Inactive members of the club - members who have paid dues but have not participated in at least one club activity each month of the semester.

Section 4: Privileges of membership. Only active members may vote and may take part in club-financed trips.

Article III - Officers

Section 1: The elective officers for this club shall be President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and two Agri-Life Council Representatives.

Section 2: Officers shall be elected by ballot at the last meeting of the academic year.

Section 3: The President shall

  1. be the chief spokesperson for the organization
  2. preside over club meetings
  3. be responsible for organizing the club's meetings programs and activities

Section 4: The Vice President shall

  1. become the presiding officer in the absence of the President
  2. assist the president in performing the duties of that office

Section 5: The Secretary shall

  1. keep the minutes of the general and executive officer's meetings
  2. be responsible for all official club correspondence
  3. keep a list of all members and their status as active or inactive

Section 6: The Treasurer shall

  1. keep a record of all financial transactions and shall report the club's financial status at all regular club meetings.
  2. prepare a budget for presentation to the NC State University Agri-Life Council.

Section 7: The Agri-Life Council Representative shall be responsible for representing the club at all Agri-Life Council meetings work closely with the club treasurer

Section 8: Any of duties listed above may be delegated to an individual or a committee as required.

Article IV - Dues

Section 1: The club membership shall vote on the dues assessment at the beginning of each academic year. Dues will then be paid by the next regularly scheduled meeting or at the second meeting attended by a new member.

Article V - Amending the Constitution and By-Laws

Section 1: Amendments to the constitution or by-laws shall be presented by members of the club in writing and read at a regular meeting but shall not be voted upon until the next regular meeting, and then only after informing each member for the proposed amendments. A majority of 2/3 of the members present and voting shall be required.

Article VI - Meetings

Section 1: The club shall meet monthly during the academic year and as required.

Article VII - Committees

Section 1: The club may form such committees as the membership deems appropriate to facilitate their activities.

Article VIII - Faculty Advisor

Section 1: The faculty advisor for the club shall be a member of the faculty in the Department of Microbiology.

Proposed By-Laws

  1. This organization is a student chapter of the American Society for Microbiology and is associated with the North Carolina Branch of the American Society for Microbiology.
  2. The faculty adviser shall be a member of the North Carolina Branch and National American Society for Microbiology.
