Graduate students can get course credit for Microbiology Journal Club by signing up for 1 credit of MB 810R. Any student who is signed up for credit is expected to present a paper.

Microbiology Journal Club

Course Description

 

Microbiology Journal Club (MJC) is a traditional scientific journal club. Each session will have a participant present the background, content, and implications of a paper of their choosing to the audience. The audience is expected to participate actively.

Learning Outcomes

 

To be able to critically interpret and present material, concepts, and implications from the primary literature in a seminar setting.

Course Structure

 

Each meeting of MJC will have an assigned presentor. This person will provide the instructor with the title and citation information for the paper they have chosen to present at least one week in advance of their presentation. It is expected that the audience members have read the paper prior to each meeting. The presentor will present (using presentation software such as PowerPoint or Keynote, overheads, or a suitable alternative) the background and context of the paper, the paper itself, and interpret the implications of the paper.

There are no textbooks, extra expenses, or unusual materials required for this course.

Restrictions

 

There are no prerequisites or co-requisites for this course. The course is restricted to graduate students.

As a graduate student only course, this course does not fulfill any undergraduate General Education Program categories or co-requisites.

Transportation

 

This course will not require students to provide their own transportation. Non-scheduled class time for field trips or out-of-class activities is NOT required for this class.

Safety

 

This class does not involve and unusual safety issues or risks.

Grading

 

This Course can only be taken for credit only (S/U).
Performance in research, seminar and independent study types of courses (6xx and 8xx) is evaluated as either "S" (Satisfactory) or "U" (Unsatisfactory), and these grades are not used in computing the grade point average.

Requirements for Credit-Only (S/U) Grading
Any student taking this course for credit will be expected to present a paper. Satifactory presentation of this paper will be graded subjectively. Participation in discussion as a part of the audience is also required. In the event that the student performance seems to warrant a grade of "U", the instructor will consult with at least one other participating Microbiology faculty member before assigning the final grade.

Policies on Incomplete Grades
If an extended deadline is not authorized by the Graduate School, an unfinished incomplete grade will automatically change to an F after either (a) the end of the next regular semester in which the student is enrolled (not including summer sessions), or (b) by the end of 12 months if the student is not enrolled, whichever is shorter. Incompletes that change to F will count as an attempted course on transcripts. The burden of fulfilling an incomplete grade is the responsibility of the student. Late Assignments
Postponements of seminar dates past the end of the semester will result in a grade of "IN", which will be changed to S/U after the students presentation the following semester.
Attendance

 

Attendance at all Journal Club meetings is mandatory. Absences will not be excused. Presentation date changes should be arranged at least 2 weeks in advance.

There are no electronically-hosted components for this course. The MJC web site, however, will have an up-to-date schedule and links to the papers each week, as well as copies of past announcements and presentations. Meeting reminders will be sent by email and posted on the bulletin board outside of my office.
