Exams
The two midterm exams and final exam will be 1 hour in length (perhaps a bit longer for the Final), comprised of a mixture of fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and essay questions. All material from the Monday and Wednesday lectures and the assigned readings from the scientific literature will be covered in the exams. Material from the Discussion Sessions is not covered in the exams! Exams will focus on new material, but students should also expect questions that require cumulative understanding and knowledge required to deal with this new material. You are responsible for the reading material not covered in class; there will be questions on this material on tests. Each exam will be worth 20% of the final grade (100 points each, for a total of 300 points out of 500). Students are encouraged to review the old exams (see below) in advance.
The first question of each test will be:
What are the 3 primary evolutionary branches of life? (5 points)
The answer to this question is (and these must be spelled correctly) :
Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya
Students must not miss any of the exams. Make-up exams will be given only in very unusual situations and if permission is obtained before the regular exam is given. Make-up exams may not be in the same format as the regular exams.
